Volunteer with Girls On The Run

Girls on the Run is a volunteer-powered organization! Our team of volunteers represents a dynamic group of individuals, including teachers, athletes, business men and women, and parents, all of whom possess a great enthusiasm for helping to prepare girls for a healthy and happy adolescence and adulthood.

Levels of Commitment

Your level of involvement is up to you, and you don’t have to be a runner to volunteer. Do you have a sincere interest in leading a healthy life? Do you have an interest in the issues facing girls today? Do you want to commit to the positive development of young girls? Do you wish that a program that prepares girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living had been available when you were growing up? Join the 200,000 volunteers nationwide who have already committed to the mission of Girls on the Run and make a difference today.

Join Our Board of Directors

Make a lasting impact on girls in Bexar County by helping us build a solid foundation!

Girls on the Run of Bexar County is seeking applicants for our Board of Directors.   This is a non-paid, part-time, volunteer position with a two-year commitment.  We are particularly looking for people with strong skills and experience in development, human resources, and with previous board experience.

You can apply by clicking here.  For more information, please contact Minka Misangyi, Executive Director, or Yvonne Vargas, Board Chair.

Practice Partner

Can't commit to coaching but still want to support a team? Have  only a half hour in the afternoons to lend a hand? A Practice Partner might be just your thing.

Practice Partner

A practice partner is a volunteer position for individuals interested in providing support for Girls on the Run participants during the 10-week season, at the practice 5k, and at the 5k celebration. Practice partners commit to attending at least seven (or one-third) of the practices during the season, including the practice 5k midway through. The more practices a practice partner can attend, the better, as this fosters relationship building between the practice partner and participating girls, which is foundational to the program.

Practice partners participate in games and workouts with the girls as needed; encourage and motivate all participants; assist in facilitation and/or planning the community service project, practice 5k, and/or end-of-season celebration as requested by the head coach; and participate in the final 5k.

Become a Running Buddy

Put on a smile and your GOTR gear and get ready for a 5k experience unlike any other. The excitement in the air is palpable as the girls meet their teammates, get their pictures taken, chant “Girls on the Run is so much fun” and squeeze in a final energy award before heading to the starting line. Your girl may want to hold your hand, skip, sprint or walk, and no matter what she chooses, you’ll be the support she needs along the course. At the end, when the finish line comes into sight, you will never forget the look on her face as she crosses and realizes that, indeed, she can accomplish anything she sets her mind to do. Ready to run?

Running Buddy Requirements:

  • If a parent assigns a Running Buddy, the buddy does not need to be processed by us.  These Running Buddies are people the girl knows, like family members, family friends or teachers.
  • A parent-assigned Running Buddy must be at least 16 years old, and can be male or female.
  • If we assign a Running Buddy, the buddy must submit a volunteer application and complete a background check.  These Running Buddies are strangers to the girls, so they must go through our screening process.

General Volunteer Application

  • All Running Buddies that we assign must be at least 18 years old, and can be male or female.
  • All Running Buddies - family assigned or GOTR assigned - MUST register for the race.

Register for 5k Here

  • All running buddies--including coaches who want to run with their team--must register for the race.  Running at the race with the team is not required of coaches.  We do need coaching staff to remain at the finish line to help place medals around the girls' necks - those coaches who assist do not need to register for the race.

5K Volunteer

Each Girls on the Run season concludes with a 5k celebration. The 5k event takes over 100 volunteers to be a success. We depend on volunteers to serve as greeters, running buddies, course marshals, manage start and finish lines, water stops, hair stations, set up and tear down and much more. We have a job for everyone who wants to help!
